"Friendship defies age and ignores distance. It weathers the hard times and shares the good. Together we have found this. Our friendship has provided acceptance and understanding in a world that pushes people apart. But we will always remain with the memories of the times we have shared knowing how fortunate we have been to be able to call you our friends."
This afternoon B called to ask what she might say to a friend who is moving away. Several families are compiling a photo album of pictures to give the couple before they leave. It reminded me of 23 years ago when we left the safety of friends we had had for 12 wonderful years in New Ulm, Minnesota. (Our children were born in New Ulm, their first friends were from play groups who became like family. The adventure of a new community in Missouri was exciting but bittersweet because of those we were leaving behind.) Our friends in Minnesota gave us a going away gathering which included a photo album that I take out occasionally to reconnect emotionally. Inside the cover of the album are the words at the beginning of this blog.
Recently I received a letter from a friend with whom I had lost touch for several years. I couldn't write.......I called - so I could hear her voice. It was as if I had spoken with her just last week. "Friendship defies age and ignores distance. It weathers the hard times and shares the good."
Indeed, friends become our chosen family!
